One small update. I did find that this functionality changed from version 6.5.0 to 6.5.1. If I rollback to 6.5.0, I’m able to regenerate all of the media and everything goes back to the way it was.

This is addressed in version 5.5.3.

It originally threw the error for me on PHP 7.2.0 on my local dev environment when I updated it.
I also just tried it on a clean install on a staging site – PHP 7.3.2. It changed the theme to a fresh install of TwentyNineteen with no other plugins and also deleted WP Retina 2x and reinstalled, but got the same error.
I’m experiencing the same thing with the latest update.
