Problem resolved. My update to password protect did not work evidently. I downloaded version 1.7.2 an installed using filezilla. I deactivated and reactivated as mentioned. I re-established the password. I also deactivated and reactivated the login-logo plugin. Still had an issue. I found I only had the issue on the initial login screen because if I entered a wrong password that error screen had the logo appear correctly.
I do have the wp-cache plugin installed. I decided to delete the cache on the server to see what would happen. Yep, the server kept rendering up the cropped webpage login. If anyone else has a problem after the upgrade I recommend clearing the cache first.
