Okay, I probably need better glasses because it was actually a Windows related focus issue, not just WordPress, and updating the gfx driver helped.. Sorry to have bothered you! Please delete this thread from existence.

I tried typing more random words to get the error message again, but no luck. It’s not spaced properly in the editor – you can see dots, parentheses etc stacked together, when in reality they are spaced just fine.
