OK Thanks for your advice it helped – a lot!
I renamed the file htaccess1 back to htaccess, as suggested.
Then I replaced it with the htaccess file that came with the original WordPress download.
Then refreshed the permalinks, as suggested, and it looks like all the error messages have gone.
I’m not sure if everything is OK – but it looks OK so far. Is there anything else I need to think about?
