  • SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host.
    Failed to connect to server
    Connection refused

I get this on a GoDaddy-hosted WP install whether I try using a Gmail or using one of the GoDaddy customer’s other domains with an email address I’ve confirmed is able to send outbound mail through GoDaddy’s web client.

    Any recommendations?

    Ok. Makes sense.

I’m thinking that is the next thing I need to eliminate as the cause.

Thankfully I can at least get FTP access if I do a screenshare with the customer but they won’t give me FTP from outside their VPN / LAN setup. Very tight security.

I’ll report back on what I find.

Here is a screenshot of the evidence that the feed is working in my Google Reader:

Note that the client tried to add the feed to feedburner using the same URL but it timed out.

    http://blog.cdmdata.com/feed/
is the URL showing in Google Reader.

Could this be a permissions thing in some way?

    Thanks for your response, Esmi.

I have tried to deactivate all plugins and this had no effect.

I tried switching to Twenty Ten and this also had no effect.

I have the server admin at my client working on the PHP memory allocation and re-upping the wp-admin and includes folders.

As far as resetting the plugins folder, I was wondering – if you delete a plugin from the plugins menu inside WP, is it not possible that there is still some “cruft” in the plugins folder on the server that can cause issues? I did at one point install an RSS plugin for making RSS feeds by category (before I realized this was standard functionality in WP) and it was deactivated and deleted and no changes have happened to the behavior of the RSS feed.

What is weird is that I just added a test post to the blog and it showed up in Google Reader (I added the feed before I noticed anything not working as expected). I’m starting to wonder if I have somehow malformed the URL using the theme’s RSS link field but that doesn’t stand up to reason since disabling the theme had no impact.
