Okay, I fiddled and got a fix to work, but now I’m unsure if it is a good idea.
I edited wp-settings.php and “commented out” the command to check whether site was in maintenance mode.
That seems a little sketchy – will it make site unstable?

I’m on Yahoo Small Business. When I go to File Manager to main directory, can find no file called .maintenance.
And if I click on “View” for any of the files, I get the “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance” message again.
