I did some further testing on a barebone environment as I could not get the plugin to behave properly in my local testing environment even with ATUM disabled.

My barebone environment setup was as follows:

Wordpress 5.4.2
Storefront 2.5.8
Woocommerce 4.2.2
Free Product Sample for WooCommerce 2.1.2

Sadly it turned out that even in this barebone environment my inventory of the non sample product was reduced when ordering a sample product.

I tested this with both simple and variable products both resulting in inventory reductions when ordering sample products.

This is off cause critical when using Woocommerce built in stock management and will hopefully be fixed asap.

However the problem is pretty simple. When the ATUM plugin is enabled the inventory in Woocommerce of the “real” product is reduced when ordering a sample.
