Thanks for the response. I had to go into many more areas of the customizer than the styling, but I was able to get all the menus, pages and widgets working with a black background eventually.
I essentially want it to look the same as my mega menu backgrounds where it shows my recent posts with a featured image and white text on a black background. I just want to duplicate that same look on all my pages in the site.
