To make this thread helpful for others I summon up how it got resolved.
Lana Codes created a separate plugin that made the Dropbox link download direct from Dropbox servers instead of going through a “proxy” so to speak (the server with the WordPress install).
Yes, it works and starts to download but stops at 500 Mb no matter the size of the actual file.
Sorry if that wasn’t clear.
I tried with a ZIP archive about 1.6 Gb, it starts to download and when reaching 500 Mb it says the download has finished but the downloaded ZIP is just 500 Mb (and broken).

And, if I use the Dropbox link directly it works so it’s something that changes when using Lana Download.
