I think there is no easy solution. You say that it “Doesn’t work if DevTools is undocked and will show false positive if you toggle any kind of sidebar.”

It’s embarrassing but it was my mistake. In my functions.php file I had a redirect from the 404 page to the home page. Once the redirect is removed the plugin works perfectly.
