I believe it could be accomplished rather easily. Just set up a new table in the db with two columns for item_id and home_page order and have a new admin section called frontpage where you could just specify which items to have there.
Mambo has exactly this functionality and it would seem easy enough to incorporate into WordPress. I may try my hand at this but as I’m a novice php/mysql programmer, someone else may have better luck and coding than I.
