I used Cleantalk (https://cleantalk.org). It was recommended to me by WpFaster.org, who have been doing some tuning work on our website.

It’s not free, but it’s very cheap (approx 25USD for 3 year subscription).

So far it has been successfully blocking spam, without any false positives and does not seem to cause any performance penalty on GTMetrix/Google Page Speed.
