In the end I did indeed use the XML export / import tool. I had actually used that before this post however it seemed to hang on me and I assumed it was a bit clunky.

In the end I did separate exports and imports (pages, posts, media) and this helped me to narrow down the issue to media exports, which really was clunky, but that’s another story.
