I am also having problems where an upgrade (with all plugins disabled) will show NOTHING!
The view source is even blank…
I; fortunately, could revert to last nights backup.
I have tried on several of my sites to upgrade to 2.8, thinking maybe a different theme or something would make a difference. No Joy!

I agree with you, could you please post your fix to make the error_log local to the wordpress path vs global eror_log.

This did the trick for me! And I put it fairly high up on the list making sure the previous tag was close and voila.
