I normally Mozilla and I was editing in Appearance > Editor > Footer.php. When something doesn’t work I usually go to Chrome and try it there. I also tried going in through the server to the subfolder and updating it there.

In all cases the page hangs indefinitely. I have never received notice of a javascript error. (I often have them when I use yahoo so I am familiar with the box that pops up.)
