It turned out to be a conflict between Meteor Slides and a plugin called Fancy Gallery. The two co-existed fine when using the Manhattan theme (from StudioPress), but didn’t play nicely when using the Metro theme (also StudioPress) when using the background image.
Not sure why the two conflicted, but I kicked Fancy Gallery to the curb and I’m back in business.
