Thanks for this – switching to Storefront solves the problem, so it looks to be an issue with the Sketch theme.

I changed siteURL and home in the wp_options table
Looking at the manual update, that needs me to be able to access the wp_login page, which I can’t at the moment.
This same problem applies to resetting permalinks – I can’t get to the login page, so can’t go to settings>updates.
with wp_debug and wp_debug_log I now get
“Not Found
The requested URL /contact-us/ was not found on this server.
Apache/2.4.23 (Unix) Server at hallambarbell.co.uk Port 80”on all pages/links other than the homepage.

That looks to me like an incorrect address.
Still worth trying the plugins/theme?
