Thank you, Allen. I checked out the other plugins before choosing yours, because it appears that only yours can be used in a widget at all. So, well done with this!
I will propose to the client that instead of drawing feeds from individual publications, I will instead covert keyword-deliminated Google News Alerts into RSS feeds, and then use those with your plugin. With the exception of not being able to know the publication source prior to opening the story, this should be a very very good secondary strategy. Getting 80% of what I want is probably close enough!

SLWrightBeyond not offering support, what is the tradeoff, or loss of functionality/performance (or whatever), by using the earlier version that does not use a database for the feeds, please?

Well, a good rating goes without saying. 🙂 But, how do you pay for the time you are spending on this? don’t answer that; it was a rhetorical question and none of my business. But, still, I should be able to pay you if I wish to. I did not pay for the plugin, and this is a lot of time you are taking. Time in life is painfully limited and not free! I don’t believe in working for free.

So, I ran a test.
I applied the category to a news item that was showing up in the feed prior to assigning it. I added a keyword that was in the headline of the article to the category. Once I did so, the story and all others from that same publication, disappeared from the feed.

By the way, I am utilizing the plugin as a text widget using only the pasted-in short code: [wp_rss_multi_importer hdsize=”14px”] rather than the plugin’s customizing widget, itself.
Beyond the hdsize, all other custom options including template style are set in the customizer and global settings areas of the Importer Settings Menu on the WP-dashboard, and everything works just fine.
