I’ve read over this page and I don’t think this is what I’m looking for or maybe I’m understanding it differently. Here’s an example of what I’m looking for:

If you hover over the “Forum”, “Articles” or “Classifieds” navigation menu button, the drop down will show the category and the number of posts in the category.
I know that she’s using Buddypress but I was not sure if this was a plugin function or a piece of code dropped in.
