Upon further testing, it does not appear as though this is an issue for all special characters. Hyphens, periods, etc. are all valid and are used within headings. The only one I’ve noticeably tried that appears to not work is the colon.
No matter what I do, the TOC anchor link text will not accept a colon, by default or as an alternate heading.
This feels like a bug to me vs something intentional. Can you confirm?

Thank you akshay; so what you’re saying is that easy TOC uses the anchor link as the anchor text, not the actually heading text?
