OK, here is more details: It works if I do (+) new image block – upload works. But it doesn’t work if I go via (+) paragraph block followed by Add Media from the menu.
The former bypasses the Media library and uploads+inserts the image via a different interface. So it’s the Media library that’s broken.

And of course this could be a browser-version specific issue. I’m on firefox-56.0.2 on ubuntu linux (and not upgrading any time soon due to multiple unported extensions to the new firefox).
As I mentioned in my original post, I have figured out the workaround. But perhaps this would be useful to other users.

There is no point repeating what others said here and on your website, I spent some time reading through both just to see that others explained what was broken, you kept replying with the same ‘clear your browser cache’ answer.
yes, I had the latest version 3.0.6, updated an hour ago. cleared the browser cache, cleared the server cache, it was all messed up, the progress bar never ending and unable to edit any of the crucial post-specific entries – they would just disappear when I click on them, no editing was possible. Firefox 39 on ubuntu linux.
the new misleading + tab to entice people to get a paid version is not fun either. we are all aware you have a premium version, trying to constantly remind that to us is not a good way to want to spend any money with you. if this feature is not available in the freebie please kill the + tab.
