I do it all the time and I don’t have any problems. I don’t think it’s bad practice, but it definitely uses up more memory at once.

You shouldn’t have any trouble moving your wordpress site to another host using FTP like Filezilla. But if you want to keep things as simple as possible, maybe choose a host with a wordpress one-click install option.
