solved…well, at least I found a work-aound: looks like there is a kind of buid-in limit restricting the reference list to 50 items.
Well, I added limit=”100″ to the code, and now my list (with less than 100 items) shows up fine!
Maybe this helps somebody else saving hours of try and error…

got them! Actually TWO plugins are not compatible:
1. Limit Login Attempts https://de.ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/wp-limit-login-attempts/ version 1.7.1

I shall deactivate plugins one by one and hopefully find out more.

I kept on digging and found that the problem apparently is NOT the syncing as both Zotpress Browse and Zotpress Reference lookup work! And I see the connectivity on my Zotero.org account for the respective site.
The issue is that on both pages and posts the wheels keep spinning without anything showing up…
