My suggestion is if you recently upgrade NextGen Gallery, the new version may handle images differently from the older version. Check your maximum image sizes in the settings.
Browsers load from top to bottom. When you load a new page your browser will automatically “jump” to the top.
Just set a max width not the height. This will allow the aspect ratio to be maintained.
