I’m running BuddyPress multisites and the menu item doesn’t appear either.
I’m guessing it works on single site BuddyPress in which there’s a BuddyPress menu on the site it’s on.
However on multisite the BuddyPress settings aren’t on the BuddyPress site, rather they are on the network admin site.
