If the Codex isn’t helping, login to your WP admin panel > Settings > Permalinks > Choose the desired structure and click ‘Save Changes’.
This will properly rewrite your .htaccess file.

Go to this page, And edit the name of the Uncategorized category to “General” or something like that.
When creating a new blog post, Make sure to choose a category that you want.

WP doesn’t keep changing, Changes made between different versions are not a big deal.
Download WordPrees, Install it (That takes like 2 minutes) and you’re all good to go. It is so tweakable and easy.
