To be honest I didn’t really got to the bottom of this. What I did find was that it wasn’t an IIS 500 internal server error, it looked to be passed by the wordpress code because of the missing configuration file! I could have 1. Altered the 500 custom page in IIS to the sites index page which effectively re-routed this error back to the index page which was far from ideal or 2. Except the error and update the wp-config.php manually
