After adding the HTML code with the help of support (email), it was still not working perfectly. The code managed to remove the thumbnails, but the results were still showing as products only. Finally, I stumbled upon the main issue.

If you have this problem, go to:
instantsearch+ dashboard > search results

Uncheck “Force searchbox to products-only search”. It’s automatically checked by default. This should solve it.
