tmp123 the stupid easy fix here is to make a mail alias for the ‘wrong’ address and redirect it.
That is a good solution for a … problem. Thanks. I’ll go for that.
The e-mail address I used is non-existent. It belongs to a domain that is my property, but the typo was in the part before the at-sign.
No one will ever receive the e-mail with the password. The forum software could be organized to receive the return e-mail and release the username, but that is apparently not the case.
If no one is able to remove faulty accounts that were created the way I did, I suspect there is a lot of dead wood in the database.
Well, I do not want to change a username.
It is just the case that I tried to register with a certain (free) username, but I provided a non-existent e-mail address (typo). Now the username is not free anymore, but will never be used because the password was never received by anyone. I guess, (if you are right) the forum software does not recognize this (process the returned password e-mail) and free the username.
And isn’t there anyone who can remove the faulty account (that will never be used if things stay like this) so I can re-register (hopefully without typo in my e-mail address)?
@esmi: is this really the case? That sounds really hard to believe. I would expect that at least someone would have access to the user database and fix things.
The way it seemingly is, everyone is able to register (thousands of) names (making them unusable for others) by using non-existent e-mail addresses. What a bummer!
What I would expect is that after registering one gets a confirmation e-mail (which is not the case, I saw that registering this temporary account), and that the account is freed if someone does not confirm. And if the software does not have this facility there should at least be someone who has access to the database who can fix things.
I’ll wait for a few days to see if something else comes up…
