Just to note you guys: I have exactly the same symptoms as webbrewers has. I have also tried to update to latest WP, but it doesn’t seem to fix the issue.
I have also contacted the host, but they haven’t replied yet.

Yep, your solution solves the number-of-posts-at-frontpage -problem. But what I’m looking for is customizable generic solution to add multiple variables for theme to use. Sure these variables could be written to (say) functions.php -file, but it’s not very admin-user-friendly solution.
I have been using all three, but most of my developing history is achieved with WP. I would say that the CMS you know the best is the right for you. Most important thing is the ability to customize the CMS for your own (or your customers) needs.
For me, WP offers the best combination of customizability, ease of use and features.
