I found that by changing themes it started working again. I suspect the plugin doesn’t work when a Full Site Editing theme like Twenty-Two is being used. Perhaps because FSE adds the new beta site editor and removes the customizer?

In case anyone else is having this issue – the child theme solution didn’t fix it so I had to overwrite the original. That did the trick.
Thanks Juliette. Such a helpful answer! I was thinking that might be the issue, comparing the 2 code segments.
Maybe I should add this to a child theme initially, just in case the author overwrites with an old version again in an update?

I’m staying with v2 until this is a bit more stable. Amending theme files isn’t a viable option for me in this case due to overwrite problems later when theme is updated.

To clarify – it wasn’t necessary in v2 but is needed for v3?
Btw, I did follow the instructions but the error persisted.

MozI should add:
1. The problem goes away when I switch to default theme (“2012”)
2. Restoring the previous version (2.6) removed the problem
