It’s overlapping the text that follows, even if I try to put a blank line between the code and the line of text. (The blank line gets deleted when saving the page.)

We also have this issue. It seems to only happen on webkit browsers (Chrome, Opera & Safari). Firefox is unaffected.
Setting the width does not help on WordPress 3.6, (tested on Firefox 23.0.1)
