    Hi

I have now tried all the different thumbnail generation options. Page Seeker, Shrink the Web and Robothumbs seem to work. However, for all of these the load times seem a little slow, so I wanted to create generate thumbnails and store locally. However, when I try to do that with any of the options, about 90% only create and store the generic ‘generating thumbnail’ holding image.

I have no idea what could be causing this. I guess one option might be shared hosting not giving enough time for the script to run before the thumbnail can be created and added?

Any other ideas as to what could be causing this?

    Many thanks for your help
    Trevor.

    Hi

Many thanks for your reply. I don’t have a test environment for my site, and reading up there are big warnings about not enabling WP_DEBUG and WP_DEBUG_LOG in your wp-config.php file if it is on a live site. I looked into setting up a test site, but it looks a bit complicated. I guess without more info, there is no way we can identify what the issue is. When I feel brave, I might try to enable the files for one go at seeing if I can get any extra information, but in the meantime the work around is to deactivate the Link Library plugin whenever I need to edit an affected page or post. I’m hoping that a future upgrade of either the theme or the plugin will just magically fix the problem πŸ™‚

    Kind regards
    Trevor.

    Hi

OK – so I was just about to send an email to pagepeeker when I thought I’d double-check the free plans for exactly what they offer. It looks like the free branded unlimited option doesn’t include the SSL URLs (am assuming this is the one you’ve built in to Link Library), but the free unbranded option does – the down side is that a link back is required and you get 100,000 API calls a month (I have no idea what level of traffic you would need to hit that 100,000!).

Here’s a link to the page I got the info from: https://pagepeeker.com/free-thumbnails/

I guess if the 100,000 limit on API calls will frequently be a problem for users of Link Library then there is no point in adding the feature. You could include two options for pageseeker – the one you have already implemented and then a second that uses the alternative free option which includes SSL URLs (if that is what is needed to stop the error when forcing https:// on a WordPress website – or any site I guess). I have no idea how much work that would be to set up, and it would need to be clear what the difference between the two is, I guess, too.

In the meantime, I have tried Robothumb again, and this looks like it might work for me at the moment because it seems to accept https://

I don’t seem to be able to use the dynamic loading of images – perhaps that is due to my hosting provider, so I am having to manually generate thumbnails for each link and storing them locally. I guess the advantage is that they load much quicker. However, I only seem to be able to grab the smallest or second smallest thumbnails otherwise I just get the Robothumbs holding image imported.

Anyway, sorry for the long reply, thank you for your help

    Kind regards
    Trevor.

The error indicates that their SSL certificate does not support their free domain. They will need to take action to support HTTPS for their free service.

    Shall I try contacting them?

    Hi

Thank you for getting back to me. I spent a fair while trying to make it all work switching around and testing all the settings you have on the plugin. I almost gave up, – and unfortunately lost all my links (my fault – I didn’t back up before performing a particular operation during updating) but then had a breakthrough.

Thankfully, there was no problem with the functionality of the plugin – or my WordPress install. Turns out I had misunderstood how all the plugin settings were working together – I persevered because I knew you had 10000+ users and couldn’t find anyone else with the same issue, and also had extensively tested first if it was an incompatibility with the theme or any plugins I was already using – but these checked out OK, so my logic was that it had to be something in the settings if it wasn’t a bug. I wish I understood more, as it would have probably saved a lot of heartache.

A few other items I came across while I was trying to get the settings right:
    1. Under Global Options > Category selection method there are two choices: Multi-select list and Comma-Separated ID list. There didn’t seem to be a pop-up help for this, and I couldn’t work out where it is being used / relates to.

    2. On the submission form, there is a field called ‘Reciprocal Link’ which is pre-filled with ‘http://’. I have set the field to show on the submission form (not required), but when I test submissions, there is a message displayed when you try to submit that says ‘The input value is not a correct URL. Requires http://’ (I leave the field alone, so the http:// pre-filled information is still in the field). If I hide the field, I can submit a form successfully. I’m thinking this is probably something wrong with my WordPress site as I assume no-one else has contacted you about this issue already?

    3. Could I suggest a very small thing – perhaps the Link Address and Reciprocal Link field alerts could say β€˜The input value is not a correct URL. Requires http:// or https://’ – because it works if you use either. Just a thought.

I hope you don’t mind me submitting these items. I think the plugin is great.

    Many thanks for your help
    Kind regards

    Hi

Firstly, many thanks for looking into the updates to the automatic thumbnail generation part of your links plugin. I’ve updated to the latest version to try it out. Currently, I’m experiencing an error message – I’m forcing https:// on my website to ensure that all parts are secure – I mention this because it might affect the error message and how to fix it.

The thumbnails are currently displaying a missing picture icon for me in WordPress when I switch to Pagepeeker thumbnails. I went in to the HTML to see what the raw link generated was, and copied that out and tried to post the link in a new browser window. When I did, the browser returned the following error:

Websites prove their identity via certificates. Firefox does not trust this site because it uses a certificate that is not valid for free.pagepeeker.com. The certificate is only valid for the following names: api.pagepeeker.com, http://www.api.pagepeeker.com

    Error code: SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN

    View Certificate

I turned off the force HTTPS plugin, and now it seems to be working well – so it looks like the plugin was causing the issue. I would love to be able to continue to use the force HTTPS plugin, beacuse it does ensure no warning on the https:// browser but I don’t know if it would be easy to make Link Library work with forcing https:// as I don’t understand why it is clashing? The generated link by your plugin seems to look OK with the https:// links nicely in place, so I can’t think what else would be causing it.

Hope this makes sense, and here’s hoping this is a very simple issue with a quick solution.

    Many thanks again
    Kind regards
    Trevor.

A further update – I’ve currently included the category selector as a drop-down menu on the page using the AJAX method (have also tried the GET methods) and when I click ‘GO’ regardless of the category selected, all links are displayed unfiltered.

I can’t work out why this might be – have tried reinstalling the plugin and disabling all other plugins in WordPress. I am using wordpress 5.4.1 in case that helps.

    Many thanks for your help

    Hi

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I’m not very technical, and a quick search reveals that there are not many choices for free accounts… I did find https://pagepeeker.com/free-thumbnails/ – but I would have no idea if pageseeker would work for this plugin. I’ve never used the service so I don’t know if it is any good. I guess the other issue is that at any time, any one of these free thumbnail providers could stop offering a free service.

It seems that most auto thumbnail services are now only paid-for services. πŸ™

    Many thanks for your help

    Hi

This is just a suggestion πŸ™‚

It looks like Thumbshots has discontinued (https://www.thumbshots.com/Support/Articles/tabid/93/EntryID/47/Default.aspx), and Robothumb looks like it hasn’t been updated for a long time. When I switched to Robothumb, it didn’t seem to function too well in pulling in the thumbnails.

Is there any other newer auto thumbnail system that could easily be included in a future update of the plugin?

    Many thanks for your help
    Trevor.
