Thanks for getting back to me. I have a local (XAMPP) copy of the site. Switching the theme to StoreFront enabled all the thumbnails (by category, product search, etc.) to show normally.
How would I go about finding which element of the theme is causing this problem; as it seems endemic, I suppose it’s one of the core functions.

As suggested, the API was at fault. I created a new one with the bare minimum of information: App Name, App Description, and App users. It worked a treat.
