I got the same error and am now looking to replace this as I don’t want to solve this by installing another plugin.
Worked after repeated attempts to activate
My sitemap does have content, over 3000 URLs when using the Google XML sitemap – https://financetrainingcourse.com/education/sitemap.xml
Before last 2 updates to Yoast I could see all the URLs in the Yoast generated sitemap but suddenly they disappeared and now the XML error. I have cleared the cache a number of times but still no luck. The above link is not helpful, even if I hadn’t published a news article, it should not get rid of my 3000 URLs.
Have disabled XML sitemaps for Yoast and using Google XML sitemaps until someone fixes/responds!
Had the same issue … was able to resolve it by turning off Enable live traffic logging.

Yes the problem persists regardless of orientation or zoom.
Will put up a screeshot from an android phone shortly.
