I actually sorted this out!
It turned out that there was something wrong with the page that the frontpage was pointed to in the Hestia frontpage settings. I created a new blank page and pointed Hestia to use that as frontpage. Then all sections re-appeared.
For the curious, the page tied to the frontpage only contains the text for the About section.

Orbit Fox is installed and activated. Do I need to activate a Hestia module within Orbit Fox?
