This is great news. In the meantime, can you steer me in the right direction on the function/filter part of the question? (I have a site launch this week and would love to write a plug-in or function to enable this until it gets rolled into the main build)

I’ve experienced the same thing and just filed an issue on the plugin’s GitHub page. Joost responded immediately that the plugin doesn’t use wp_mail, so not really sure what’s happening…
