This was not resolved. I was actually quite disgusted that Yoast Support has absolutely no solution or answer to HOW the spam search results have been found by Google and subsequently reported as 404s.

Also, that you assert that there is no problem because Google sees them as 404s – I have hundreds of these erroneous search result pages marked as 404s, with more and more added every day. Excessive amounts of 404 pages is NOT good for a sites SEO. Especially when there are more of them than pages indexed.

    Hi Jeroen

There are no additional users, sitemaps or any other evidence the site has been hacked or any malicious actions taken.

These 404s can ONLY have come from the Yoast Plugin NOT noindexing search pages.

Also, my search pages via the search bar are built within my theme and do not generate ‘true’ webpages. The spam results are being generated purely by persons unknown manually typing in my URL with /s or /search and their spam terms after that. (My site does not use /s or /search as valid file paths)
For that reason, I believe my developers have manually blocked the use of those terms.

The problem remains however that Yoast is not operating as advertised. And I shouldn’t have to pay a premium for features when the basic ones do not work correctly.

    Hi Michael

I have changed the permission on the Google Doc so you should be able to access it.

It is a screenshot of URLs being logged as 404s in my Google Search Console. There is no point in my giving you those URLs here as they do not exist (hence the 404s) – and my issue is that Yoast is not noindexing those search strings as per the hidden feature, and thus allowing them to be logged as 404s.

    Thank you.

Clearing the cache didn’t fix it.

    Theme: Sela (1.0.15) by Automattic

Thank you for continuing to respond.

When I included the full code the image appeared and my comment was flagged for moderation according to this forum. I did not want to encounter that problem again and did not think it would make a different to your helping me with fixing the issue. The actual filepath for the image can easily be seen on the source page.

As for ‘what is meant’ – I don’t know how to explain it anymore. The code that was above that comment does NOT show the first line of code (if you look at the live page you can see the different presentations) – but the single and double quotes are the reverse of what you initially advised in a previous answer. I am trying to learn and I was confused that what you said I needed to do to fix it, actually only worked in the opposite way.

As for the difference between single/double and curly quotes – I have only ever used the quotes as indicated on my keyboard – it would appear that doesn’t translate to what you want it to do – but for someone with no coding knowledge and no other options on the keyboard I’m not sure what you expect me to do.

It might be best for me to just uninstall the plugin.

    Thank you

Thanks for your help – I have copied and pasted exactly what I see in the text editor in my previous comment.

    Here they are again:

[expand title=’Img url‘ tag=”div” trigclass=”noarrow”] These are my go-to sites for the best prices on the web [table id=4 /][/expand]
the above shows the first line of code on the page

[expand title=”image URL” tag=”div” trigclass=”noarrow”] The stuff that gets you on the move. Backpacks, Daybags, Hand luggage, packing cubes & more. These are the basic essentials which physically get you on the road for whatever trip you have planned! [table id=3 /][/expand]
The above does not show the first line of code but is the opposite to what you advised.

And Neither option is collapsing the text.

    Hi

Thank you for your reply. I have changed the double to single but I am still not getting the desired result. (And I am editing in text not visual) – I have left the page with the following code set up:

(the first drop down banner image on the page – Websites)
The single quotation marks around the image now show the image again but also the first line of code when viewed online:
[expand title=’‘ tag=”div” trigclass=”noarrow”] These are my go-to sites for the best prices on the web [table id=4 /][/expand]

(the second drop down banner images on the page – Travel Gear)
If I reverse this and have double first and then single quotes around the image url file path, it shows the image and not the first line of code (which is what I am looking for)
[expand title=”” tag=”div” trigclass=”noarrow”] The stuff that gets you on the move. Backpacks, Daybags, Hand luggage, packing cubes & more. These are the basic essentials which physically get you on the road for whatever trip you have planned! [table id=3 /][/expand]

..But neither of these options are collapsing the text.

    Hi

Thank you for your response, however I have never used the WordPress menus. That menu bar on my site was automatically created as I created pages within the editor. As a consequence when I go to the menu editor, the page is not listed in the menu to move.

This query is specific to the Sela theme.

    Please can a developer assist?

    Thank you for your answer

My options for image size are Thumbnail (which are grainy); Medium or Large which results in the following report on speed tests:

    the 6 image URLs with
    – is resized in HTML or CSS from 800×671 to 295×247. Serving a scaled image could save 83.2KiB (86% reduction).

Is there no way to force it to only show the recommended 295×247 image?

This was the only way I could find to contact WP – my mistake that anyone from Automattic would be interested – and thanks to those of you who have responded to try and help.

The site was moved over by Bluehost – and I had no issues with the settings page for the first year of having the site – it has only been after recent updates from WordPress that the settings pages no longer work.

I have a workaround, so it’s not a major issue – it’s just annoying that I have to go back and turn off the ‘close comments after x days’ section after each WP update.

    Thanks again everyone.

    (@vickigarside)

I have tried completely disabling all plugins – I still cannot save any of the settings.

My host recommended posting in here as they thought WP would be interested as it isn’t an issue caused by any plugins.

Thanks for letting me know multiple h1 tags don’t matter – I was freaking out when I ran 2 different seo audits and both flagged the same issue.

I think I’ll just leave everything as is.. 🙂

Thank you for all your help.

The site crashed upon a defective upgrade of the Yoast plugin.
The site was essentially deleted and rebuilt over the course of a weekend. I think everything is back to running normally now.
