I spent a half hour on the phone with GoDaddy to see if they could clear the cache. They have a tool called Website Accelerator, which they appear to be phasing out. Tech support couldn’t help me with that, but they pointed out that I’m still using PHP 5.4 web hosting, which is going to get upgraded to 7.0-7.1 next month, in case that had anything to do with it.
We flipped back and forth between themes to experiment and when we did that the widgets were dropped into a side bar, which I had to manually drop back into the footer when I switched back to Twenty Seventeen. Then the updated text magically appeared. Tech support suspected that it was something glitchy with the widgets, which is why we tried that.
I don’t know what to say.

Thank you for responding. This site is brand new and just registered yesterday. So this is my first experience with the theme. I don’t have a caching plugin installed. If this helps, I installed WordPress from the GoDaddy website.
