I figured it out, and even amazed myself by altering the right line of code, uploading the custom template to the right folder, and evoking it correctly.
So — case closed, and thanks again.

And — excuse my ignorance — where do I find the captions template, in order to make a custom template based on it?
I had actually come across what seemed to be an answer to my question here:

but when I went into the nextgen-gallery plugin folder, the structure was not the same — and instead, I found folders called “pope” and “non_pope”, neither of which seemed to have the referenced “captions” template.
