As a follow-up; The plguin ‘Posts Slideshow Widget (Post Image Slider Widget)’ appears to go some way to helping me out.
It allows me to specifically select WP Catalogue categories, however looks for the featured image in each post, however there are no featured images in WPC posts.
It seems this will be no easy one to overcome without heavily modifying a slider plugin.
