thanks for checking and getting back to me so quickly.
The fact that you can’t see the little white box brought me to the idea that it might be a browser issue. And in fact it is. It seems to appear only when using Safari. I now checked with Firefox and Chrome and then it’s gone.
But still no idea what it is. I can’t see it in the source code.

You are right indeed – it is my theme that causes the conflict. When activating a standard theme instead, popup maker workes flawless.
Unfortunately I can’t just change my theme. So I have to deal with it.
But after testing several other popup plugins I found one (Popup Box) that works eventually.
