PS – i forgot to say i am using the basic version (not Pro version) of the following plugin
“PVB Contact Form 7 Calculator”
so if I replace VariableA with say the number 2 then it works ok
<label> This is the total amount
[calculation cal-total-amount “number-of-items * VariableA”] </label> doesn’t work
[calculation cal-total-amount “number-of-items * 2”] </label> works ok

I don’t know the answer, but have you tried disabling some of the other plugins and see if that makes a difference. Maybe a plugin conflict somewhere.
