thanks for your quick reply!
I tested on a stage with few BuddyPress test user accounts.
I deactivated all other plugins except the themes´ core plugin, tested it with and without external SMTP service but no email was sent.
To make sure I haven’t forgotten anything in the configuration: in your installation guide you say
“If emails are not being sent ensure that the activity component is turned on”.
Which activity component? ^^

Alternatively, I tested another plugin (https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/notification/) for which a BP extension is available. Worked fine (but no group specific notifications).
