You actually HAD a custom excerpt specified – take a look on the page now. I have removed the excerpt from the post: http://jmmeyer00.alwaysdata.net/blogtest/wp-admin/post.php?post=1&action=edit
And it properly displays the readmore button now: http://screencast.com/t/bTvAvRuSST
Note that the excerpt field was hidden and you simply might’ve not seen it.

You may see now that the Read More button is showing up now.

OK, I understand now my misunderstood. Sorry for that. I did not imagine that this setting could interfere with the widget – as other plugins I tested show excerpt no matter of this setting.
Well I decided to stick up with the default WordPress behavior which doesn’t limit the excerpt if specified manually. This actually gives more control and allows filters to populate and I’ll keep it this way!
