• Can someone please help me??? My best friend and the person who built my wordpress site passed away before Thanksgiving.. she took care of everything and now my site doesn’t work at all. I managed to get godaddy to reregister my domain back to me by supplying them with legal documentation but how do I get control of this end of things so I can find another person to help me? I am in real estate and can’t have my site down for months. I found on her computer what I think may be the login information but it doesn’t seem to work. HELP

    Sorry to hear that. πŸ™

Are you able to access the blog’s Dashboard? If not, what errors do you see, or is it a blank page?

Thank you so much for responding James. I think I was at the blog’s dashboard and as I mentioned nothing worked wherever I went. Maybe I am wasting my time and need to have somebody else rebuild my site for me, but it was really awesome and she had all these plug ins and feeds going to it not to mention the MLS and various home search options. I am not the only person she built wordpress sites for either and now I am hearing they are in trouble too.
GoDaddy was no help at all and they sent me to codex.ww.wp.xz.cn and I was totally lost there. I am not technical at all as you may have gathered… I sell real estate in Arizona and all I want is a way to get my web site back. If you can help I would very much appreciate it.
Patricia had a stroke in August and I never had the heart to ask her for all this as I was certain she would think I didn’t have faith in her being able to get better, which she didn’t.. πŸ™

We can help, but we really do need specifics. There are many things that “nothing worked wherever I went” could be.

Do you see any errors as you navigate around, and if so, would you please quote them? Are you completely missing options? Are sections blank white where there should be content?

Ok.. so I have an icon on my computer for my website dashboard. Here is where it takes me.

    http://homelightrealtyaz.com/wp-admin/

I have absolutely no access to the back end of my website at all so I don’t know if there are options missing. I assume they are there.
She also was absolutely obsessed with hacking and really dialed in on security since it happened to some of her other sites and she spent hours getting them back up and running.

I am not sure of how the billing goes, but I know if there were fees charged that those have not been paid since her credit/debit cards have been shut down. Most all of the plug in’s she had were free but there may have been some that weren’t.

Oh, the hosting may be shut down.

You’ll need to contact GoDaddy support and explain the situation to them. Like with the domain, they may be able to recover the site and your access to the hosting account.

While you may not have access to the Dashboard, do you at least have access to your server? If you can access your server (on GoDaddy), you should be able to directly modify the database, grab the password, etc. Your website is definitely safe, you just need to crack the puzzle of how to get in. I’m 100% certain you don’t need to rebuild it though.

So, I was told by GoDaddy yesterday that if it has been inactive for more than 30 days (I have no idea how long it has been down) it has fallen off the DNS server and they can’t retrieve it no matter how much I beg..does that sound right?? He can’t even tell me if they hosted it, but I am sure they did.. My friends son has her computer so I am going to see if he can find anything on it that could help me. is this the right approach or should I be trying something else?

Unfortunately, yes, that probably is right – if the hosting or domain registration lapses, they really have no obligation to keep the site up.

Looks like you did just renew the domain name?

If you can’t find anything, you could also try the internet archives – looks like the site shows up :)!

At least you’d be able to copy the content.

I did renew it I suppose. They managed to reassign the domain back to me as the original owner after I sent them some legal paperwork for my business and I had to accept it in my godaddy account which I think renewing it was part of the deal.

I suppose what happened is that she was paying them to host it and I would repay her every 3 or 4 months. When she passed away and the credit card was cancelled I imagine they took down my site?? Just a guess.

also, just so I am clear. I have two issues.. one is the godaddy hosting and my inability to get at that and the other is wordpress as it would also have a login and password correct? I have her son searching her computer for any login and passwords she may have stored and I could probably talk to a supervisor at GoDaddy but still the wordpress will be even harder to get if at all.. am I correct? Thank you for all that are responding. I truly appreciate it.

    Yes, so very unfortunately so.

Yes, there are two issues – but unfortunately, ww.wp.xz.cn (here) isn’t actually connected to your site at all – except for supplying software and some help on these volunteer forums. So we don’t have any history or backup or any other info about any particular site that runs on WordPress software. GoDaddy would be the only source of info or actual data and it sounds like they don’t have any. Most hosts do have some grace period, but this was past that, no?

IF they can find a backup of the site files or the database, we can mostly likely help you get that installed on a new WP site – but that doesn’t sound likely.

So sorry you’re in this situation – I really wish there was something more we could do.

I have her son searching her computer for any login and passwords she may have stored…

Maybe your friend had backups on her computer? Hope so.

Oh yes, definitely, thanks Bill! If there’s files and database backup on her computer, we can help you get those moved back to a live site πŸ™‚

    (@macmanx)

If you get the backups, or find who was hosting it before and they have the backups, we can probably most definitely help you get into the blog, but you do need access to a hosting account with the files and database restored first.

    (@ghandley)

OK..!! will do my best on all of the above. Not sure she would have had a backup?? Lesson learned.. don’t give anybody total control over your website and hosting. Things happen that are never anticipated.
Oh, and I have a wordfence code.. long, maybe 60 characters and a password for database.. I also have an admin name and password but don’t know what it goes to. Maybe wordpress? I am so sorry I am so inept at all this but that’s why I hire people to do these things. It’s frustrating.

    Moderator James Huff

The admin name and password probable logs you into the WordPress site. Now you just need to find a backup or it and get it on a hosting provider, then you can use that to log in to it.
