I just tried to update to the latest version. The last log message I got was “plugin installed correctly” only the message that it was activated again did not come.

Now UpdraftPlus is no longer in my list of installed plugins and when I try to install it again I get the following log messages:

    Downloading install package from https://downloads.wp.xz.cn/plugin/updraftplus.1.9.63.zip…
    Unpacking the package…
    Installing the plugin…
    Destination folder already exists. /sites/uthar.nl/bots/wp-content/plugins/updraftplus/
    Plugin install failed.
    Return to Plugin Installer

How can I fix this without losing all my settings?

    Hi,

When WordPress updates a plugin, no plugin code is run. WordPress just:

    a) downloads the zip
    b) unzips the zip
    c) moves the unzipped files into place

As such, there’s nothing a plugin author can do to improve (or worsen!) the process, since a WP plugin doesn’t do anything as part of the upgrade process; it’s all handled inside WP core.

    David,
So what can we all do to resolve the problem?
Is there specific advice you can offer a hosting service as a solution or workaround?
Is there a change needed to WordPress to avoid this problem?

At this time, only Updraft Plus fails in this way.
My other plugins update without any problems.

There’s a bug in the WordPress bug tracker for how it handles plugin updates, here – https://core.trac.ww.wp.xz.cn/ticket/33571 .

To investigate why you have a problem on a particular setup, you’d need the cooperation of the server admin of your webserver. 1&1 are the worst offenders we see in our support channels in terms of inadequate resource provisions for common operations, so, I’d place my money on it being the server deliberately killing it off when resources are tight – but, you can’t really get a definitive answer unless you have a server admin willing to co-operate on an investigation.

    David,
Thanks for providing the WordPress bug tracker reference.

I’ll also open a (another) support ticket with 1&1, but I don’t expect their “experts” will have any idea how to resolve this problem.

    Thanks,
    Wayne
