What fixed it was upping the permissions for the database user, including also ALTER, as I guess the new version uses a slightly different table structure. After that I installed the latest version of ECF and it worked.

I also found a template that gets rid of the right sidebar on pages.

The production site puts news in a footer widget instead, but people don’t find the news then.I’ve set the following here:

A static page
Front Page: — Select — (there is no home page to select for this theme, so I didn’t)
Posts Page: NewsYou’ll see the strange framing of the content and the same content is shown on both the home page and the news page.
