Right, I got that. I’ll only reinstall GA long enough to see if going thru Ads triggers the broken shopping cart.
I’ve got GA off as well. Like I said previously, Ads is a lot of wasted money if I can’t use GA to track historical search terms.
I’ll check back with my testing results
Ok that’s a lot more to go on. I’ll try that on my own site over the weekend and see how it works.
I was only ever able to recreate the error once and I’m not sure if I linked thru an ad or not. GoDaddy was never able to recreate it but I’M sure they went straight to the site.
I’m tryin to figure out what that would mean but this might also get Google involved as it’s possible to speak with an Ads rep.
If WordPress has any ins with Google too, that would probably get further faster.
I’ll update if I get anywhere.
Thanks fmdonini
The Ads thing is really interesting. I’ll look back at the info I still have available and see how that lines up. Thanks.
I’m using Beaver Builder theme and others I have spoken with used different themes so that doesn’t seem to be it.
The (nearly?) universal thing seems to be GoDaddy MWP. No way to be sure but most of the people I see with the issue have that….Do you?
While it seems like a caching issues, it would be happening to pretty much everybody if that was the case. However…. As few people seem to have heat-mapping software installed on their sites, I’m betting it’s happening to a lot more people who think customers are just abandoning their carts, not realizing they do that because they can’t check out.
Hi fmdonini,
Hmmm… Only when coming thru Google ads? You’ve separated organic and ads and it held up?
I deleted Analytics and have had no problems. The first day I tried reinstalling Analytics, I had the issue reappear.
Not having Analytics loses valuable data BUT…. I can’t do away with Google Ads so something has to stay.
And this is either effecting all sites with MWP or there is what is probably a simple technical fix within some sites. But I’m stumped.
I’m poring over GA settings this weekend to see if something doesn’t match up with how I think it should be.
Hi James,
Thanks for getting back to me on this.
I really have no idea at this point if it’s a caching issue, a security setting or something entirely different.
All I know is that with GA removed I have zero issues and with it added it happens to some, but not all, customers.
That’s the weird part is that not everybody is effected. I have only been able to recreate the issue once and refreshing my browser corrected it permanently. However, I have two customers who have never been able to correct the issue despite refreshing, reluanching, clearing out their cache etc… But, when I remove GA, they complete the transaction no problems.
If you get more info it will be much appreciated as not having GA means we’re missing a lot of info. And as I said earlier, I’m betting their are many other business owners dealing with this on their sites but without software to view what’s actually happening while customers shop, they simply think people abandoned their cart, not knowing they couldn’t complete the transaction
Update after 4 months or so.
I’ve had no errors where my cart shows empty despite items showing in the cart icon.
I finally reinstalled Google Analytics code and BAM! First day I see someone on my site with the error showing.
I deleted GA again and sent an on-screen message asking them to call.
After speaking with the customer, who was very willing to help out, I found this:
He tried on 2 computers and got the empty cart on both.
I asked him to close our site tabs and clear out his history and restart his computer. While he did this, I cleared my site cache. When he restarted and tried again, now with GA deleted, everything worked fine.
There is an obvious conflict with GA and either GoDaddy or WordPress. And again, if you don’t have heatmapping software installed so you can view customer interaction, you might just think people are leaving their carts and shopping elsewhere and not understanding why…..rather than because they can’t checkout.
I’m checking all GA settings but so far see nothing that I believe would cause the issue
Hi Jerome,
Thanks for responding again. I do realize there are plenty of other issues to solve besides mine and greatly appreciate the help you’ve been.
I can’t even find within Godaddy how to change my cache level….Maybe not possible in Managed wordpress, dunno.
I’m not sure if my staging site also provides it’s own sFTP acces but, if so, I’ll change mu-plugins there and see the effect.
And again, I understand this isn’t just a “you” issue, but it is definitely others are having. If it weren’t for me adding heatmapping and eventually watching live as people were experiencing issues…..I may never have known. I have to think there are many others having the same issue.
To note- It does seem that most everybody I’ve read is on Godaddy managed wordpress so that obviously is part of the problem, but whether it’s GA, server-side caching or some other problem altogether is a question in both Godaddy’s and wordpress’ interest in solving. I know you can’t solve it all, but hoping wordpress can/will devote some resources to seeing if they can find the culprit(s) for all of us.
Google just came out with their GA4 along with new Global site tag code that I’ve installed so…. and I think it was you who recommended clearing Theme cache(never knew that was a thing) so I did that. lastly, I did clear out the revisions on my database(877-backed up first and tested on staging site).
It’s a waiting game now to see if the issue pops up again
I don’t have much else to go to Godaddy with. Honestly, they’re tech support is almost completely incompetent. They’re phone clerks try but they have limited knowledge and are of little help solving issues.
If it’s possible to escalate this up the ladder at wordpress, there will be a lot of shop-owners appreciative of that. Otherwise, thanks again for you help, you gave me some great insight
Hi James,
Thanks for the effort.
Not sure if you can help with this or not but… Just reading another thread regarding this-
https://joscor.com/blog/remove-godaddys-wordpress-plugin/and
https://www.reddit.com/r/woocommerce/comments/bsauuw/woocommerce_cart_not_caching/
If you have a chance, looking for thoughts here. Could this be of help? Any downsides that you’d know of renaming the mu-plugins folder?
I already deleted the object-cache folder after a recommendation from ….forget who now.
Thanks again James
Hi James,
Thanks for your response.
First, in the Github thread, in a follow-up message, I mentioned I don’t have Sitekit installed. I am having a similar issue to those in that thread so it seemed pertinent….also, as I’m at a loss I’m kinda desperate to find anybody with an answer.
Godaddy tech support is virtually useless. Those who answer when you call in are really just customer service reps who will forward a ticket to have the issue addressed. I’ve been told repeatedly there is no way to speak with the people who actually do the site work as they’re all overseas( India). Also tried speaking with Godaddy hosting…. I couldn’t find a single hosting support rep who even knew they had server-side caching on managed wordpress, much less that they use Varnish.
With that, from the responses I’ve read on multiple forums, the issue seems to be either a caching issue with Godaddy caching Woocommerce pages(cart, checkout, myaccount) at times or…. Google Analytics somehow breaking the cart functionality for some users
Some users report that deleting the GA code solved the issue. Not great if you want to pay attention to that…others report the issue instantly solved by switching hosting providers.
Woocommerce support has told me that coding with Woocommerce pages instructs servers not to cache Woocommerce pages. I also installed Wp-Rocket as it’s the only caching-type plugin permitted by Godaddy on managed wordpress as it is supposed to work well with Varnish( an issue with other caching plugins I’ve been told?). By default WP-R instructs to not cache Woocommerce pages as well.
WP-R also gave me another line of code to insert hoping all the redundancy in instructions would put a halt to woocommerce caching….if that’s the issue.
No. The issue persists.
I did install new GA coding yesterday…. Global site tag to replace my old GA code. I’ve only had one customers start the checkout process since then, it failed BUT… that customer was returning from a previous session so that could just be that their browser has cached the old info
Even though I don’t have Sitekit, it seems like it’s simply either anything with GA in it or caching. That Godaddy doesn’t even know what their system does is an issue.
If you’re inclined, give a shot at going thru the checkout process and see if your cart turns up empty. One thought is, if that happens, there should be a mention of caching on the page source coding if that’s causing it.
Anyway, thanks for your response James
Is this still open?
I am having the same issue, but do not have site-kit, simply Google Analytics. Same error, add items to cart, view cart, cart says “Your cart is currently empty” but items appear in cart icon still.
On Godaddy managed wordpress
We have only been able to replicate once but a refresh( we think) of the browser solved the issue. Haven’t been able to replicate again. However, we have numerous visitors who have had the issue. Godaddy has also not been able to replicate the issue after 30-40 tickets to repair.
At this point, they are of little help, tho you seem to have had better luck with them
Website- https://bazookabob.com
Installed WP-Rocket(only caching type plugin allowed by Godday) as it instructs to not cache woocommerce pages by default.
THEME- Beaver Builder
No other caching plugins tho had several installed months ago then deactivated and deleted them.
Wordpress cust service did help me track the issue all the way back to when site first went live (May 2018). Today, I replaced old GA code with Global site tag code so not sure if that could help but it’s costing us 10s & 10s of 1000s to have this issue
Also, installed WP-Rocket, the only caching type plugin allowed for Godaddy managed wordpress. By default, it instructs not to cache woocommerce pages(cart, checkout, myaccount)
IMPORTANT- This issue does not happen with all visitors, occurs in all browsers and devices. Visitors who have the issue, seem to always have it. We did have one customer who had identical computer setups on 2 different office devices and one unit couldn’t complete checkout, the other had no issue at all.
Our site bazookabob.com
To restate the problem, some visitors add items to their cart then when going to view cart receive a “Your cart is currently empty” message, but items still show in cart icon.
We have not been able to recreate except once but a refresh on the browser got us past it and we’ve not been able to recreate on any device since.
Not resolved.
Is anybody still monitoring this.
I am also on Gadaddy Managed wordpress and have the same issue.
Using analytics, I was able to track the problem all the way back to when my site first went live (May 2018). Not good
I can’t get any info from Godaddy….do they cache woocommerce pages or not etc…
If Godaddy said they have a fix, did they mention what it is?

In reply to: [WP Menu Cart] Cart says empty but items show in cart iconAlso Alex,
If you get as far as the cart but the can try going to checkout….a few times that triggered the error. Refreshing the browser seems to solve it if that occurs

In reply to: [WP Menu Cart] Cart says empty but items show in cart iconHi Alex,
Thanks for getting back.
Hopefully, you can’t replicate. I may have found a solution thanks to Woocommerce support.
They believe the issue is a communication break between GoDaddy caching and Woocommerce pages. By default, Woocommerce says there pages are coded to tell servers not to cache Woocommerce pages (‘Cart’, ‘checkout’ and ‘myaccount’).
Woocommerce believes that, at times, Godaddy’s server-side caching is failing to do that.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t even find someone in Godaddy tech support who even knew they had server-side cache for managed wordpress sites.I’ve been working on this 6 months with Godaddy and no solution. @ chats with Woocommerce to solve.
The solution( if this works) Add the WP Rocket plugin. That plugin is the only caching plugin allowed by Godaddy managed wordpress and, like Woocommerce, by default tells Godaddy’s server-side caching(Varnish) not to cache Woocommerce pages.
The hope is that this redundancy will stop the “Your cart is currently empty” error.
Otherwise, moving to another host is all that’s left. For anybody on other servers, read up on caching of Woocommerce pages as it seems some cache plugins are just not compatible with Woocommerce.
Something important I’d say for anybody with a Woocommerce site, install heatmapping and use it! Being able to actually view what is happening with my visitors is the only reason I’m aware of this problem. I probably would have thought it was just dropped carts otherwise.
I still appreciate anybody making sample purchase on our site and letting us know here if you have an issues. We just installed the plugin this morning and so it’ll take sometime to make sure it’s working right.
Thanks again Alex
