Hey @ali2xja
First, go ahead and update to the latest version of the plugin to make sure things are still not working.
Next, I made a video showing what *should* be happening: https://www.loom.com/share/a485cdec28ef47009127b96fead20959
If you’re seeing something different, please clarify, and we’re happy to jump on it! As soon as I can replicate a problem on a different site, I’m happy to work toward resolving it. Have a great day!Hey @johntafur
I am not able to load that site very well at all, it’s giving me errors related to the SSL certificate.
That said, the error you’ve pasted in here is what would happen for one of two reasons:
- A form created with the new visual editor (released yesterday) had all of its setting mysteriously deleted.
- A form created in the 2.x options-based editor has something saved in such a way that the v3 editor *thinks* it’s a v3 form.
So to get to the bottom of things, a few questions:
- Is the form in question one that you created with the new form builder, or the old form editor? (If you don’t know, or if you created the form before yesterday, it’s likely the old method)
- Are you knowingly adding anything to the
post_contentmeta for GiveWP donation forms. (This might be being done by some other plugin or the theme) - Also, please send along your System Info. Navigate to Donations –> Tools –> System Info (tab) and click the button to “Get System Report” and copy/paste that in your reply here. That will give me some more context to be able to help.
Hey @toad78 !
That’s certainly not what we’d want. I just tested on a test install here and I’m seeing what I would expect to see on that page.
First, make sure that you’ve updated to the latest version. At the time of this writing, that’s 9.0.0
Without more context, It’s going to be tough isolating what’s going on, but usually when a screen is blank, there’s an error message *somewhere* and we just have to dig it up. Try opening your browser console and seeing if that sheds any additional light. You can right-click anywhere on the screen and select “Inspect” or similar depending on your browser, and that should open the console. Once it’s open, refresh the page and see if there are any errors. If that doesn’t get us any closer to resolution, we’ll need to check server logs or something. Are you seeing anything actionable in the logs at Security > Logs?
Hey Tim,
Following up here (a few days, several back-and-forths on your priority ticket including some videos helping to isolate the problem, and lots of personal attention later) to just publicly say this appears to mostly be an issue with the Alone theme by Bearsthemes. As I said in my reply on your ticket: we’ve tried for years to get the folks over at Bearsthemes to answer our calls to help our mutual customers, but they just don’t seem interested in doing that. We even wrote a public blog post calling them out, to which they never replied.
The offer stands to get you moved over to the KadenceWP theme, where I can guarantee that you will not have the issues you are having with Alone.
Hey @bitforgood
You’re a bit outside of our normal refund policy, but you definitely reached out to support while still within it, so I am happy to extend a refund if it comes to that. We take our customers’ experience very seriously, and honestly a little personally when you say things like “terrible support.”
I did find your recent back-and-forth with our support team and I’m happy to weigh in there as well. Our number one priority is your success with online donations, and while there seem to be a few barriers right now (most notably from your recent tickets seems to be that we are having trouble replicating the exact problem you are having with the Currency Switcher add-on not playing nicely with the Zapier add-on, but there are other issues related to the Salesforce add-on as well).
I want to get to the bottom of those issues for sure. I believe that we can.
One thing I did want to mention just so we’re all on the same page: You’re using the one theme that we go out of our way to not recommend, to the point that we even wrote an entire documentation article explaining why not to use it. That’s not necessarily the cause of your issues here, but it very well could be contributing to problems. That theme is rife with issues that the theme authors don’t seem willing to resolve, because it’s selling so well.
I’d love to earn back the missing stars from your review here, and will definitely be reaching out (in just a few minutes) on the support tickets in question.
Hi @scr1921 !
That particular error message is saying that you’ve exceeded the rate limit, meaning you’ve done too many attempts to scan the site in a row.
After waiting and retrying, do you get the same error message?
It’s possible that the issue here is related to caching causing the plugin to *think* that you’ve attempted too many times.Either way, we’ll get to the bottom of the issue for sure. Pass along any additional logs you have after waiting the time stated in the message, and We’ll definitely have a look!
Hey @lonwofl10
Following up here to make sure you’re all set! We’re happy to help if not.
Because notifications for this forum are difficult to follow after a certain amount of time, I’m going to mark this issue as resolved. That’s not an indication that we don’t want to hear from you, just that it may be best given the elapsed time to go ahead and open a new post here, and we’re happy to help!
Hi @drhnews!
Following up here to make sure you’re all set. I also just tried to replicate a problem by doing the following:
- Create a user
- Install and activate iThemes Security
- Change the user’s password while logged in as an admin
- Attempt to log in as the new user with the new password
- In the iThemes Security settings, force strong passwords.
- Change the password again, while logged in as an admin
- Attempt to log in as the new user.
Everything is working as expected.
I’m going to mark this topic as resolved, but if you can get me some steps to replicate the issue, we’re happy to have a look.Have a great day!
@michaelpersch @isidore1964 @therese3
Thanks for the feedback here. With the impending rebrand to SolidWP, we’re taking a look at ways we can make things better or more useful, and this type of feedback is exactly what we need. I really appreciate it.Part of the problem (well, maybe “problem” is the wrong word… challenge?) of a product like a security plugin is that different hosts handle processes like updates differently. Some push updates that appear to us like totally new files, and others push updates that appear as file changes. So we have to find the path that is least confusing.
If any of you are still having issues and want us to take a deeper look, please open a new forum post, for sure. I am marking this one as resolved, since it’s a bit old, and the notification system for these old posts makes them easy for me to miss.
Your success and security online is our top priority!
Hi @cp_so !
Apologies for the abysmal turnaround on replying here! This message somehow slipped through the cracks. Were you ever able to resolve this issue? We’re happy to keep digging, for sure.
Since it’s been a while, (and the notifications on this forum are lackluster for followup messages!) I am going to mark this as “resolved.”
If you’re still having issues, just start a new thread with the latest, and we’re happy to hop in!
That should not have happened. I misread the initial post there thinking that you manually changed the status to Give Donor from within the settings.
I’ve just tried again to confirm on a test site, and donating while logged in does NOT change the user role, it adds an additional one.
If you are seeing something else, we’ll need a way to replicate that behavior for sure.
I would suspect something awry with a user role plugin or something. It’s a bit of a long answer, here, but the short version is that while there currently *is* a way to disable user creation, that’s going to eventually be going away, so I need to give you a bit of context/explanation.
GiveWP’s primary focus is raising money for your organization, which involves some privacy issues around things like access to the receipt, access to donation history, etc. The last thing we want to do is to expose things like donor address or donation history to unauthorized site visitors.
WordPress itself has a true and battle-tested permissions system (users and user roles) that is best suited for that purpose. At all times, the WordPress user system is aware of the logged-in user, and GiveWP is able to display things conditionally to that particular authenticated user.
GiveWP has a separate system currently for user authentication using email addresses known as “email access” which has served us well over the years, but admittedly does not do as good of a job (especially on sites where caching is involved) with authentication.
It’s a simple matter of scale.
The GiveWP email access system is tested and maintained by a handful of developers. The WordPress user system is tested and maintained by thousands of developers, and deployed in live environments representing billions of active users.
For that reason, we’re eventually (though not immediately) moving away from the email access system toward all donors having user accounts on the site.
Important points:
- The GiveWP user roles never have additional access to or control over any site data (other than obviously the data pertaining to their OWN donations, and even then it’s read-only.)
- You as a site admin do not have to tell your donors that they have user accounts on the site. It can be completely hidden from them by disabling the email that is sent with their password reset, and by hiding the admin bar from the top of the page. We’re happy to help with that, and would point you toward some third party plugins to do that hiding of the admin bar.
What you experienced when you changed your admin user to Give Donor user is very intentional, and illustrates my point: once you were just a Give Donor and no longer an admin, you had no control over your site.
Happy to answer any questions, for sure.
Please give them a call at 888-350-2387 and PayPal should be able to help. They’ve assured us that they will help when folks are having trouble connecting.
Thanks!
They have not announced a date, but it’s definitely going to eventually be sunset, so it’s worth getting that executive on a call with them, and walking through that process sooner than later.
Better to fix the issue before there’s urgency, for sure!Apologies for the slow turnaround here! I’m happy to have a look, but technically not allowed to support premium products on this forum. Please shoot me an email at [email protected] and I am happy to have a look.
I just tested on a test site and the bule buttons are showing up as expected, so I am assumig this is something particular to that theme. or something. I’m happy to have a look. In your message to me, include your system info from Tools > Site Health > Info.
Happy to get to the bottom of this!
